Shift At Midnight Guide: Core Loop and Survival Tips

A practical Shift At Midnight guide: the serve-and-screen loop, the five-question limit, sales quotas, co-op roles, and survival basics for all 13 shifts.

How do you actually play Shift At Midnight?

Every shift in Shift At Midnight runs on the same loop: serve customers, screen every visitor, and survive what slips through. You work the night shift at a rural gas station, and some of the people walking in are doppelgangers pretending to be human. Story Mode runs across 13 procedurally generated shifts, so encounter order changes between runs while the structure stays stable.

This page collects the verified basics plus advanced tips from experienced players, with the confidence level of each marked.

The core loop

A shift mixes two jobs that compete for your attention:

  • Store work. Serve customers, handle deliveries, and keep the station running. Hitting the sales quota is mandatory to pass the shift, so ignoring the register to focus only on the horror is a losing strategy.
  • Customer screening. Question visitors, inspect their IDs, cross-check their information on the store computer, and watch their behavior. The full screening toolkit is broken down in the doppelganger detection guide.

When a doppelganger gets through, the shift flips into survival: barricade doors, deploy traps, fight, or hide. Multiple weapon and trap types are confirmed to exist, though exact stats are Pending confirmation.

The golden rule of screening

Experienced players converge on one rule: deny service, investigate until certain, and execute on the spot before processing payment. Never let money change hands with a customer you have not cleared.

This comes from community tips videos rather than official documentation, but it matches how the confirmed mechanics fit together: once a sale is processed, your options narrow fast.

Use the five-question limit properly

Questioning is not unlimited. Players report a five-question limit per customer, which turns questioning into a resource:

  • Serve and observe first; do not spend questions on a customer showing no inconsistencies.
  • Once something deviates from normal, a wrong date or an odd answer, tighten the net and spend your questions there.
  • Timestamps and expiration dates on paperwork are classic trap spots where doppelgangers slip.

Check every angle

Advanced players recommend using mirrors, chrome displays, and tinted doors to get extra viewing angles on customers before committing to a judgment. If a visitor seems off, look at them from more than one position before you decide.

Customers are not one fixed cast

The customer lineup can vary between shifts and playthroughs, so memorizing night-by-night answers from an old guide will fail you. One fan wiki describes 6 customer types with different behaviors, a community-sourced figure rather than an official one. What is confirmed is that fixed walkthroughs age badly against procedural generation; the screening skill is what carries.

Playing in co-op

The game is designed for 1–3 players. In co-op, split the loop: one player serves and questions while another runs computer cross-checks. Judgment calls become group decisions, which is both the strength and the risk of a full lobby. See the multiplayer guide for lobby details.

What comes after the story

Finishing the 13 shifts is not the end of the game. A separate Endless Mode exists for post-story play, and a major free content update for it is planned for Q4 2026 — that date comes from community wiki tracking, so treat it as provisional until the developer dates it. The endings page covers how the story itself resolves.

Quick checklist for your first shifts

  • Learn the four screening tools before anything else: question, ID, computer, behavior.
  • Never process payment for an uncleared customer.
  • Hit the sales quota — it is mandatory, not optional flavor.
  • Prepare barricades and traps during calm moments, not during an attack.
  • Expect a different customer order every run.
