How do you actually play Shift At Midnight?

Every shift in Shift At Midnight runs on the same loop: serve customers, screen every visitor, and survive what slips through. You work the night shift at a rural gas station, and some of the people walking in are doppelgangers pretending to be human. Story Mode runs across 13 procedurally generated shifts, so encounter order changes between runs while the structure stays stable.

The core loop

A shift mixes two jobs that compete for your attention:

• Store work. Serve customers, handle deliveries, and keep the station running. Hitting the sales quota is mandatory to pass the shift, so ignoring the register to focus only on the horror is a losing strategy.

When a doppelganger gets through, the shift flips into survival: barricade doors, deploy traps, fight, or hide. Multiple weapon and trap types are confirmed to exist, though exact stats are Pending confirmation.

The golden rule of screening

Experienced players converge on one rule: deny service, investigate until certain, and execute on the spot before processing payment. Never let money change hands with a customer you have not cleared.

Use the five-question limit properly

Questioning is not unlimited. Players report a five-question limit per customer, which turns questioning into a resource:

• Serve and observe first; do not spend questions on a customer showing no inconsistencies.
• Once something deviates from normal, a wrong date or an odd answer, tighten the net and spend your questions there.
• Timestamps and expiration dates on paperwork are classic trap spots where doppelgangers slip.

Check every angle

Advanced players recommend using mirrors, chrome displays, and tinted doors to get extra viewing angles on customers before committing to a judgment. If a visitor seems off, look at them from more than one position before you decide.

Customers are not one fixed cast

The customer lineup can vary between shifts and playthroughs, so memorizing night-by-night answers from an old guide will fail you. Playing in co-op

Finishing the 13 shifts is not the end of the game.
